Youth Outreach Program
Coastal City Ballet’s Youth Dance Outreach Program is tailored to each school’s schedule with no hassle for inviting schools. Coastal City Ballet usually brings and sets up its own professional performance floor while the dancers warm up. The dance floors and sound system are set up in the gymnasium during the school’s lunch break or when the gym is free. After lunch teachers will bring their students to the gym, and once the students are seated the show begins.
The performance is organised with a maximum duration of one hour. It includes various dance genres, a demonstration/learning portion and a question and answer session at the end of the show. It is our goal to inspire students as we entertain and introduce them to the beauty of the world of Dance.
Coastal City Ballet is pleased to offer the following programs:
The latest sampling of what we are performing and working on. This show features a variety of dance styles that will undoubtedly appeal to any audience.
Abridged Story Ballet
A shortened story ballet (classical ballets are often 2 hours in length) for our younger audiences and we narrate them. Don’t worry we don’t cut out any of the exciting parts. This show is an excellent adjunct to any performing arts related history lessons that students may be learning.
We would be happy to present a custom production with some historical dances or some special dance moves / tricks that some of students may be interested to try out. For example, we can provide our performance as part of the theme for a school's cultural day. We would be happy to sit down with any school to come up with a performance that suits your needs. Please note this type of show may take more time for planning to accommodate requests.

Every year dance students around British Columbia are given the opportunity to audition and perform in a real full-length story ballet. Coastal City Ballet mounts a full-length story ballet in the spring which includes children's roles for students ages 7 to advanced. Past productions include "Hansel and Gretel" (2012), "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (2013), "Coppelia" (2014) and "Cinderella" (2015). Coastal City Ballet believes that different schools working together to give talented artists an opportunity to perform in a full-length ballet represents the generosity and camraderie of the arts.
The audition for children's roles in the ballet "Hansel and Gretel" which has its world premiere in May 2012, is complete. Over 40 children, age 7 and up, representing multiple local dance schools, were in attendance to audition for the roles of mushrooms, goblins, peasants and tree fairies, among others.
"Hansel and Gretel" will be performed on December 17, 2017 at the Vancouver Playhouse in downtown Vancouver. Choreographed by Irene Schneider, this full-length story ballet is perfect for families and children of all ages. The classical production tells the timeless story of a brother and sister-duo who get lost in the woods and stumble upon a delectable house made of gingerbread. Hansel and Gretel are soon helping themselves, unaware they are falling into a Witch’s trap.
In the spring of 2018 Coastal City Ballet will perform its seventh story ballet for Vancouver audiences. We invite young dancers of all ages to be a part of this production. Please check back for audition information or contact us at email@example.com or call 604.738.8575 for more information.
